How to Wash Sheer Curtains without Destroying Them

Sheer curtains are a quality addition to any house. The semi see-through fabric lets in a wide bouquet of light and provides any room with some well needed ambiance. However, sheer curtains can get dirty quite easily and are difficult to clean.

The first step to cleaning sheer curtains is obvious: remove them from the windows. Since these curtains wrinkle easily, be gentle when you take them down. This next step is very important – use a pencil or pen to make a mark on the internal heading pleat where the hook is inserted. After a turn through spin cycle it may be difficult to find!

The second step is to load the washing machine with slightly warm water. Dissolve some type of conditioner, especially if the curtains are very dirty. Next, carefully place the curtains in the conditioned water, but make sure you do not overload. Plan on using about a half a load of curtains! When this step is completed turn the washing machine on gentle for about two minutes. Then, let the curtains soak for five or six more minutes.

Now it is time to rinse. After the rinse is complete reset the washer to refill with cool water and add detergent. If you dissolve the detergent carefully, you can avoid clumping the soap. Next, run the wash on gentle for a few minutes. Make sure you stay close to make sure the curtains do not rip.

For the last rinse, use cold water. Now you can remove the sheer curtains from the washing machine. Put them in the drier and add a few small hand towels that will absorb extra water coming off the curtains. Use the coolest setting on the drier for a few minutes. Take out the damp sheer and lay them flat. The last step is to reinstall the hooks and rod and you are ready to go! Your nice and clean sheer curtains should look great by now.
