Concrete Countertop Care
If you’ve invested in a beautiful concrete countertop, you want to make sure to take the proper steps to give it the best care possible.
Cracks – While not all concrete countertops will crack, some can develop hairline cracks. The cracks are usually non-structural and result from natural shrinkage of the concrete. These cracks can be prevented through reinforcement. Fiber reinforcing is a popular method to reduce chances for cracking. Other methods used for reinforcement include using rebar or mesh. No matter which method is used, cracks still may occur.
Stains – Counter tops are sealed for water and stain resistance. If the concrete is left in its natural unsealed state it is porous and will stain. Staining can also occur if the sealer is compromised. It is best to consult with your concrete countertop contractor about how their countertops are sealed, and resist staining.
Cleaning – Cleaning your countertop is not any more difficult than cleaning any other surface. However, you should avoid abrasive soaps or cleansers. Abrasive pads should also be avoided for the cleaning process. Non-abrasive, non-ammoniated soap is recommended for daily cleaning. A neutral pH cleanser and warm water can also be used. Just simply follow the instructions of your countertop contractor, as they will know what works best for their product.
Other Notes – Cutting and placing hot pans on concrete countertops should be avoided. It will not hurt the concrete itself, but will cause damage to the sealer that protects your countertop.
